Quiche with Ham, Cheese, and Veggies

I hope everyone had a great Christmas this year. As usual we always celebrate on the Eve at my mom’s house.  My Christmas Eve was filled with too much food and too much drink. My Christmas Day consisted of two naps, some aspirin, very little food and a lot of misery. We did however get invited back to my mom’s for leftovers that evening. I had a bowl of chicken soup and a few pierogi and called it quits. On the way out the door my mom gave me a bag of Dearborn Sausage ham to take home. So now we fast forward to this morning. Armed with the bag of ham, I would normally fry a bit and throw on a few eggs and call it breakfast. However today would be different. Today I was going to blaze a new trail and try something I have never made before. I realized that after cooking for myself for nearly twenty years, I had never made a quiche. Now part of that may be because my entire life I’ve heard over and over again how real men don’t eat quiche. The word quiche doesn’t sound very manly, I’ll agree with that. Then I realized since starting this blog I’ve been accused of many things, none of which have been about being a man. I’ve been called Martha, Julia, and some other things we will leave off of this post to avoid offending anyone lol. With all of that said, I figured would it really matter if I made and ate a quiche? I thought not. So armed with a bag of ham and a refrigerator filled with staples, I went to work. I apologize in advance to my blue jean, flannel shirt wearing 4 wheel driving, animal killing friends for making this quiche. I had no clue what to do at this point. I decided to look for ingredients I would normally like on a pizza with ham. It came out perfect on my first try and even my wife who isn’t crazy about eggs liked it. I will say I looked at a few quiche recipes to see how long and at what temperature to cook this at. Everything else was on hand and out of the fridge. This will be made again! Here is what I did.

Ingredients

Canola oil or butter

1 cup of chopped ham

1 cup of mushrooms diced

1/2 cup of red onion diced

heavy 1/4 cup of green bell pepper diced 

1 small garlic clove chopped fine

rounded 1/4 teaspoon of Italian seasoning

salt and pepper to taste

3 eggs beaten

1 cup of half and half

1 cup of three cheese blend (sharp cheddar, mild cheddar, and white cheddar)  

one pre made deep dish pie crust (I used a Marie Callenders I had in the freezer)

Directions

Pre-bake the pie crust per package instructions (mine took 12 minutes at 400 degrees). Lower oven to 375 degrees. In a saute pan using the oil or butter, saute the ham, mushrooms, onion, and green pepper until partially soft and most of the moisture cooks out of the mushrooms. Add the garlic and saute for a minute more until soft. Sprinkle with the Italian seasoning and salt and pepper to taste. Remove from the heat. Pour mixture into the pre-baked pie crust. Top with the cheese and set aside. In a bowl whisk the three eggs until well beaten. Stir in the half and half and mix well. Pour over the mixture in the pie crust and bake at 375 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes or until the eggs are cooked and the top is slightly golden brown. Enjoy!

    This is without a doubt the best quiche I have ever had. Everything about it was absolutely perfect.

    This looks delicious. Haven’t made a quiche in quite a while. I have a pie shell in the freezer. May have to make this tonight.
